Thursday morning we left Reykjavik for a tour of the surrounding area. In Thingveiller National Park, we got this view of the "bottom of an ocean." Iceland was created by a hot spot on the mid-Atlantic ridge, where the North Amercan and European tectonic plates are pulling apart. The fissures, and even the lake beyond, are created as these plates separate at a rate of a few inches per year.
