President Olafur invited us to wander throughout the presidential home, to view the various artifacts and historical gifts. He mentioned during a brief address that these two would soon give him a diplomatic conundrum. The owl was a gift from President Reagan, and the clock from Premier Gorbachev at their famous summit meeting beginning the end of the cold war. Gorbachev is scheduled to visit Iceland later this year for the first time since that famous meeting. The problem is - the clock has never worked and even the best Icelandic clockmakers can't seem to fix it.
