Gullfoss (Golden Waterfall) is Europe's most powerful waterfall. A farmer's daughter, Sigidur Tomasdottir, walked 50 miles to Reykjavik to protest the building of a hydroelectric plant which would have ruined the falls. She said she would fling herself over the falls if construction proceeded. More practically, she convinced a lawyer to fight the contract - eventually he won. He also became Iceland's first president.
